Catfish (Pangasius sanitwongsei)

Identification:
Dark-bronze back, silvery light and deep curved belly. Dark and prolonged dorsal, pectoral and pelvic fins. Flat and wide head with no whiskers.
Typical location:
In the deeper waters of river and lakes.
Fishing methods:
With live or dead bait such as fish or Frogs spinners and bread. Worms are a killer if you can find them.
Fighting characteristics:
Top of the list of the world's most powerful fish. Responsible for sending many anglers back home with sore arms

Identification:
Large green scales with dark green to blue edges. Dark to black fins and tail. Short but high dorsal fin. Light to cream coloured cheeks.
Typical location:
In weedy areas of deep, slow flowing and quiet water.

Bottom fishing with dough, bread, potatoes, cheese or earthworm.
Fighting characteristics:
Endless powerful pulls in search of underwater snags.


Mekong Catfish (Pangasius gigas)


World Record (56.50 kg) caught in Thailand

Feb. 2003 Terry Robert Mather, England sorry Terry but this is a sprat to what is out there. I can not belive this world record is still standing. This is the world's largest known fresh water fish one has been netted in Thailand at 660-pound (300-kilogram)

Giant Mekong Catfish.Pla Buk.Pla Beuk.
Identification:
Dark-bronze back, silvery light and deep curved belly. Flat and wide head with very low-set eyes and no teeth. Unlike other catfish, the Mekong Catfish has no whiskers.
Typical location:
At the bottom of the deeper waters on the Mekong river.
Fishing methods:
Bread and bait substance often in combination with a bait ball.
Fighting characteristics:
One of the strongest fish in the world. Often described as an underwater steam train. 300 yds of line in seconds

I have seen Arawana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) on thai fish markets much larger that have been caught in a net.

Identification:
Large scales, big eyes and an upward angled mouth with two forked barbels. Dorsal and anal fins are well behind the pectoral fins and extend almost to the tail.
Typical location:
Shallow and calm water in rivers and lagoons.
Fishing methods:
Lure casting with spinners and minnows. Fishing with live or dead prawns, mullet or herring.
Fighting characteristics:
A beautiful jumper that later in the fight seeks shelter around underwater snags, plants and other submerged structures.

Identification:
Dark green to olive back and grey to silvery sides. White to cream coloured belly. Yellow to bronze fins and tail and a large head with small and low set eyes.
Typical location:
Near the bottom in rivers, lakes and ponds.Lives in freshwater but can be found in brackish waters as well.
Fishing methods:
Bottom angling with bread dough, potatoes, molluscs, prawns, maggots or earthworm.
Fighting characteristics:
Long powerful pulls, will head for snags.

In slow flowing or standing waters with soft bottom.

Bottom fishing with bread dough, potatoes, molluscs, prawns, maggots or earthworm.
Fighting characteristics:
